Summer Meals

The Food Connection hosted its first Summer Meals site in 2007. We provided a lunch and a snack each weekday at the St. Leo Food Connection for 20 – 25 children of our clients, as well as children from our local neighborhood. Since many of the children we serve receive free or reduced meals during the school year, this helped them continue to receive adequate nutrition during the summer months.

The program included arts and crafts projects to help feed their minds and spirits as well as their bodies. In 2009, the Summer Meals program had expanded to provide sack lunches at eight different sites throughout the community. In 2010, the program will again expand to serve lunch to kids at a total of fifteen sites, including one in the Springbrook neighborhood. This meal site will provide sack lunches in conjunction with our mobile food bank project.
