HELP FIGHT HUNGER

Volunteer

We work hard to involve people from all walks of life in our day-to-day services. The Food Connection staff is here to help you find out how you can help us fight hunger in Pierce County.

Everyone Has Something to Share

We are particularly proud of our cooperative ventures working with Centerforce, Vadis, L'Arche Tahoma Hope, and Metro Parks' Community Access Program. We've found that we are able to provide meaningful ways for developmentally disabled folks to make valuable contributions that increase their self-esteem. We also work hard to facilitate volunteer opportunities for people with severe psychological/psychiatric disorders.

We are also proud of our ongoing relationships with schools such as Annie Wright, St. Patrick's, Bellarmine, Tacoma School of the Arts, St. Francis Cabrini, and Charles Wright. These students are able to learn at a young age the value of giving back to their community.

Volunteer Opportunities

Collect/Process/Distribute Food

We need volunteers Monday – Saturday to help collect, process, and distribute food to our clients. We can accommodate individuals and groups as large as 10 to 15 people. You can volunteer once, regularly, or sporadically!

Volunteer opportunities include driving our van to make food pick-ups from local stores, sorting food in our processing area, and helping build food baskets for our clients.

Organize a Food Drive

Our client count has increased by 20 percent since we more than doubled our food line hours and began our mobile food bank project in April 2006. More clients mean we need more food.  Holding a food drive at work or school is a great way to support the Food Connection. You can hold a drive focused on general non-perishable items, kid-friendly food for our backpack project, or baby food and formula to support our youngest clients. Whatever your focus, we can help you set up a successful drive.

Getting Started

We need volunteers at our regular food bank to process and/or distribute food Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:00 - 4:00, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 - 6:00, and Saturdays from 9:00 - 2:00. We also need volunteers for our Springbrook mobile food bank on Saturdays from 10:00 - 3:00. We ask volunteers to dress appropriately - no open-toed shoes or suggestive clothing. Long term volunteers will have to pass a background check.
